| Byrd Gets 3 Hits, Dempster Solid in Cubs' Victory |
MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Ryan Dempster made progress toward his opening day start with four solid innings, Marlon Byrd had three hits and the split-squad Chicago Cubs defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 in 10 innings Sunday. Rookie D.J. LeMahieu hit a game-ending home run. With the teams running out of pitchers, the game was to end after the 10th no matter what happened. But LeMahieu connected against Luis Vazquez after Bobby Scales led off the inning with a bloop single. Dempster, making his second start, gave up a run on three hits and struck out three. Cubs closer Carlos Marmol struck out three in the fifth. Byrd has four multihit efforts in six games this spring. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
