|Illinois Baseball Raises $10K for Tornado Victims
|CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- The University of Illinois baseball team has raised more than $10,000 and nearly 7,000 pounds of food to benefit victims of the tornado that hit Harrisburg on Feb. 29.
The twister killed seven in the town of roughly 9,000, destroyed 98 homes and severely damaged 31 others.
Reid Roper, the Illini's second baseman and closer, is from Harrisburg, Ill. His family and their property were unharmed, but Roper knew people who lost their home and the team decided to hold the fundraiser at Illinois Field on Wednesday.
The Illini ended up collecting $10,231 in cash and checks, approximately 6,700 pounds of food and nearly $1,000 in retail gift cards. They plan to deliver the donations this weekend when the team plays Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois in Carbondale.
