| Cardinals, Cubs and White Sox Open New Season Monday |
CINCINNATI (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals batting coach Mark McGwire says his team has a lot of potential and he expects it will be exciting to watch as the season gets under way Monday afternoon.
The former slugger will be back in the dugout when the Cards play in Cincinnati. Chris Carpenter gets the opening day nod on the mound for St. Louis. The Reds counter with Aaron Harang.
Pregame coverage begins at 11:27 a-m Monday on WGIL AM 1400.
ATLANTA (AP) -- Carlos Zambrano takes the mound in Atlanta Monday afternoon as the Chicago Cubs open the season against the Braves.
The teams' hopeful expectations are similar. Neither is favored to win its division, but each is considered among the top wild-card picks.
Derek Lowe is the opening day starter for Atlanta. The first pitch is scheduled at 3:10 p-m.
CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago White Sox backup catcher Ramon Castro starts the season on the 15-day disabled list because of a bruised right heel.
With Castro out, the team, which begins the new season at home Monday afternoon against the Cleveland Indians, has purchased the contract of catcher Donny Lucy. He's a career .251 hitter in 402 minor-league games.
A.J. Pierzinski will be behind the plate for the Sox against the Tribe. Mark Buehrle gets his eighth opening day start for Chicago at U-S Cellular Field. Cleveland counters with Jake Westbrook.
