| Did Cubs Throw 1918 World Series vs Red Sox? |
CHICAGO (AP) -- Did the Chicago Cubs throw the 1918 World Series? The suggestion is from the late Eddie Cicotte, one of the infamous White Sox players kicked out of baseball for allegedly throwing the 1919 World Series against Cincinnati.
The Chicago History Museum has a court deposition that Cicotte gave in 1920. He vaguely suggests one or more of the Cubs may have taken $10,000 to lose the 1918 Series to the Boston Red Sox, which they did, four games to two.
Cicotte says the White Sox players discussed it while on a train from Chicago to the East Coast.
Sports writer Sean Deveney wrote a book about the 1918 Series. He says there were some suspicious plays by the Cubs, including some errors and base-running mistakes. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
