HS FOOTBALL

The newly-organized "Midwest 10" high school football conference, of which the Galesburg Silver Streaks are now members, is trying to resolve a scheduling issue that threatens to change the upcoming season. It was reported yesterday that Peoria Manual still has not been able to shed a non-conference game with Eureka from its schedule in week #9, when they are supposed to play Moline under the new league format. To date, Eureka has refused to let Manual out of the contract.

Galesburg High School athletic director Ralph Henning said it's possible the IHSA could step in and force Eureka to change opponents, which would allow for league play next season.

If Eureka is allowed to disrupt the inaugural year of Midwest 10 Conference play, it would not change the schedule for the Silver Streaks. The only difference would be that all of the games with the Peoria schools would be treated as non-conference contests, and a Western Big-6 champion would be crowned again this fall.

HS BASKETBALL

Champaign Cental High School has a new, high-profile head basketball coach. Wayne McClain, who coached at Peoria Manual during their run of four-straight state titles in the mid-1990's, will reportedly take the helm of a program that went just 5-20 this past season. McClain has been coaching in the college ranks for over a decade, serving as an assistant at the University of Illinois for 11 years. Most recently, he followed coach Bruce Webber to Kansas State, where he was the associate head coach last season. It's interesting to note that one of the other candidates for the Champaign coaching job was reported to be Quincy High School's Sean Taylor.

College Baseball

In college baseball, Knox is playing host to Robert Morris, and Carl Sandburg is at home to Southeastern Iowa. The Sandburg softball team is looking to build on their 7-game winning streak as they host Blackhawk in an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader.

High school baseball/softball

The Galesburg varsity has added a game with Knoxville to their schedule for this afternoon. Also, Galva/Williamsfield hosts Annawan/Wethersfield in a key Lincoln Trail Conference game.

On the softball diamond, ROWVA is at Monmouth-Roseville, and in tennis, the Galesburg boys are playing at United Township.
