|Royals Win; Fire Manager - Or Other Way Around?
|UNDATED (AP) -- The Kansas City Royals picked up a rare victory Thursday before announcing a managerial change, although an online publication contends the change actually was made before the game.
The Royals have dismissed Trey Hillman, making him the majors' first skipper to lose his job this season. Kansas City entered Thursday on a seven-game losing streak that left them with a 11-and-23 prior to its 6-4 win over Cleveland. Former Brewers manager Ned Yost takes over, beginning with Friday's game against the visiting Chicago White Sox.
Reigning Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke picked up his first win of the season, giving up three runs while striking out eight over six innings after entering the game 0-and-4 despite a 2.51 earned run average.
Alberto Callaspo ripped a three-run homer to support Greinke.
A report by a Yahoo! sports writer says Hillman was fired before the game by the team's general manager who's also a good friend and was offered the chance to coach one more game. Hillman reportedly obliged, not wanting to go out on a seven-game losing streak.
Hillman was 152-207 in two-plus years with the Royals.
