One-Shot Drivers "All-In" for Indy 500
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Several drivers at Sunday's Indy 500 are hoping to turn solid performances into full-time jobs.

Series veterans Ed Carpenter and Tomas Scheckter are among a handful of racers who will be making a cameo appearance at Indianapolis. The goal is to drive well enough to generate enough interest from sponsors to race more regularly.

Sometimes it works. Part-timer Will Power eventually turned a fifth-place finish in last year's 500 into a full-time ride for Roger Penske.

Yet driver Townsend Bell says sponsors never called after he finished fourth last year. He's back again this year and will start 10th.

Though Bell would like to drive more often, he says the current economic climate makes it difficult to attract sponsorship. If given the choice, he'd rather drive at Indy than in two or three lower-profile races.
