|Weather Pushes Back MWC Softball Tournament
|The weather is already a factor and the Midwest Conference softball tournament hasn't even started yet.
The tourney was slated to get underway Friday, but because of anticipated bad weather, officials pushed the games back to Saturday and Sunday in Ripon, Wisconsin.
Monmouth College is back in the field for the second straight year. The Fighting Scots lost both games the team played in last year's tournament and the assignment is no less difficult this season. Monmouth matches up with defending champion St. Norbert in the first game Saturday morning at 10:00. The Green Knights ran the table in Midwest Conference North Division play this season, winning all 13 games, and enter the tournament with a 27-6 record. St. Norbert is looking to become the first back-to-back champion since Lake Forest College did it during the 2005-06 season.
Monmouth finished the regular season on a high note, winning the last three games. The Scots have a 13-20 overall record and a 7-5 mark in Midwest Conference South Division games. Monmouth has won the tournament two times: in 1979 and 1987. The Scots went 0-4 against this year's tournament field, which also involves Ripon (14-18, 8-5 MWC) from the North division and Lake Forest College (22-12-1, 12-1 MWC), the South Division champion. The Foresters have won six championships, the most among the league's schools. Their last title was in 2006.
Ripon and Lake Forest square off at Noon Saturday after the Monmouth College-St. Norbert game. The losers of the first two games play at 2 p-m. The winner stays alive to play the winner of the the St. Norbert/Monmouth College game and the loser goes home.
The tournaent resumes on Sunday at 10 a-m. The championship game follows at Noon. If another game is necessary, it'll be played at 2 p-m.
