The Galesburg Silver Streaks saw their hopes of a Western Big Six Conference crown dashed Saturday, losing both games of a doubleheader to league champion Rock Island, 10-0 and 7-5. Statistics were not available.

The GHS sophomore team took care of Rock Island, 10-0 and 4-2. Tim Rossell pitched 6 innings and gave up two hits in Game 1 for the victory. Chans Sugden drove in two runs en route to the victory, while Drew Diaz got the victory. Austin Gernant got the win in game two, pitching four innings of three-hit ball with Luke Ryan getting the save after throwing three innings of one-hit ball. Drew Carlson homered to help the Streaks (23-5) get the victory.

Rock Island was victorious in both games of the varsity double-header with Galesburg Saturday, 3-2 and 8-3. Kelsey McKillip had a home run and two RBI's in game one, going 2-3. In game two, Sam Mason got a double and 2 RBI's. The Streaks drop to 9-16 on the season, and 1-8 in Western Big 6 Conference play. They'll try to rebound Monday afternoon at home versus Washington -- 4:30 first pitch.

The GHS J/V Squad split its double-header with Rocky in two very close games. The Streaks lost game 1 7-6 due in part to five errors, while they bounced back and won 10-9 in 9 innings in game two in another 5-error game. Chelsea Howard had a total of six hits between the two games, and was catcher for all 16 innings. Katie McGee was the winning pitcher in game two.

Galesburg finished in the middle of the pack at the the Moline/Rocky Invitational Saturday. The Streaks boys got 23 team points. Brandon Meeker placed 5th in singles competition, winning three of his four matches. Maury Cohn placed 13th in singles. In doubles competition, Tyler Bond and Caleb Thompson placed 12th in the #1 section, while in the #2 section, Thad Santos and Calvin Shiplett placed 11th.


Annawan took top honors for the boys at the Lincoln Trail Conference varsity meet at Wethersfileld Friday. Rounding out the top 9 were Mercer County, Galva, ROWVA, Cambridge, United, West Central, Stark County, and Princeville. The host Flying Geese took the conference crown on the girls side. Following them were Mercer County, United, AlWood, Princeville, Galva, ROWVA, Stark County, and West Central.


Grinnell swept a doubleheader from Monmouth College (12-23, 4-8 Midwest Conference) Saturday, 6-0 and 5-1, to end the regular season.


Monmouth College kept its playoff hopes by splitting their games Saturday at the Midwest Conference Tournament in Ripon, Wisconsin. The Scots were shut out by St. Norbert 5-0 in Game 1 then defeated Ripon 4-2 in Game 2. Monmouth continues on in the tournament Sunday against Lake Forest.
