|Galesburg High School Football Coach Olson Stepping Down After 2010 Season
|Galesburg High School's football coach will be at the helm one more season.
The District 205 School board Monday night approved Wes Olson, the district's coordinator of alternative programs, as a full-time administrator. He has been promoted as the site principal at GHS North and coordinator of alternative programs. He'll receive increases in salary ($75,215) and benefits, effective July 23rd.
The board vote was 3-2 in favor of the promotion. Mike Panther and Gloria Osborn voted no and board members Robert Lindstrom and Dr. Carl Strauch were absent. Panther said his vote against the move had nothing to do with Olson's performance.
Superintendent Dr. Gene Denisar says Olson will concentrate on his administrative duties, and this coming season will be his last as the head football coach.
"Wes and I have discussed it and (2010) will be his last year as football coach," Denisar said. "Since (Olson) was the founder and went through all of the technical development of the alternative school, I feel it's important that as we go to more than 100 students at the (alternative) school that we remain consistent."
Olson, a Monmouth College graduate and LaHarpe native who played for and coached under former Scots and Silver Streaks football coach Kelly Kane, has led the Silver Streaks for the past four years, compiling a 14-22 record. Olson's best season was in 2008, when Galesburg finished with a 5-4 record but just missed the playoffs. Last year's team went 4-5.
