Galesburg High School's boys track team placed third at the Rock Island Sectional Friday, but still will be sending some of its athletes to State. Jared Carl placed first in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 22.07 seconds, sending him to Charleston. The boys 4-by-100 Meter Relay team of Carl, Travon Diggins, Deandre Law, and Dequante Carson placed fourth, but qualified with a time of 43.69 seconds. The same team also qualified for state in the 4-by-200 Meter Relay team with a third place time of 1:29.6. Senior Will Remmes placed second in the 800 meter run, but qualified for state with a time of 1:58.6. The 4-by-400 Meter Relay team of Remmes, Carson, Law, and Beau Salsman placed 3rd with a qualifying time of 3:24.39. Diggins also won the Long Jump with a distance of 22-feet, 7.75 inches. Rock Island was the sectional champ, followed by Peoria High School and Galesburg.

At the Monmouth-Roseville sectional, a number of area athletes qualified for state. Knoxville's Matt Geitner won the boys Shot Put, with a distance of 49-feet, 1 1/2 inches. Mercer County's Sam Whan and Monmouth-Roseville's Gatlin Marlow qualified in the 32-hundred meter run. United's Brandon Trego, Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon's James Miller, and West Central's Tyler Anderson all qualified in the 100-Meter Dash. B-PCA's Lance Curtis qualified in the 800 Meter Run. Mercer County and West Central qualified in the 4-by-200 Meter Relay. ROWVA's John O'Connor qualified in the 300 Meter Hurdles, West Central's Chris Cooper and Dylan Bell, and Knoxville's Josh Schragal qualified in the 200 Meter Dash. And ROWVA qualified in the 4-by-400 Meter Relay. Rock Island Alleman was the sectional champion, followed by Elmwood, Princeville, Mercer County, Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon, and Monmouth-Roseville rounded out the top six. Knoxville placed eighth, West Central placed 9th, and ROWVA came in 11th.


Galesburg High School split a double-header with Dunlap at the Galesburg Streaks Classic Friday, losing game 1 7-4, but winning game 2 18-0. Luke Ryan got a two-run home run in game 1, while Nick Milligan was the winning pitcher and got a grand slam home run in game 2. The tournament continues today.

Five Galesburg players are named to the Western Big Six coaches all conference baseball team. Seniors outfielder Dalton Davis, infielder Nick Milligan, Pitcher Tyler Farrell and Designated Hitter Zack McCrery were selected. Junior catcher Chad Johnson was also named to the roster.


Two Silver Streaks are named to the Western Big Six coaches all conference softball team. Senior outfielder Katie VanHootegem and junior infielder Kelsey McKillip made the roster for their efforts on the field.


Home field advantage didn't work for the Galesburg Silver Streaks soccer team Friday, losing in the regional championship game to Dunlap Friday 5-0.


Springfield Lanphier basketball player Kendall Murdock has signed to play for Carl Sandburg College men's basketball team next season. Murdock, a 6-foot-4 forward averaged 11 points, seven rebounds, and three assists per game in his final season as a Lion.


A four time All-Midwest Conference performer and Monmouth graduate will play pro football in Finland. Matt Shepherd, who holds a 42 game reception streak for the Scots has reported for workouts with a team in Finland.
