Beep Jones does it again, but this time at the plate. Jones hit a home run en route to Abingdon's 3-2 victory over West Central Saturday to capture the Class 1A regional title at United High School. Jones also struck out 10 batters through all 7 innings.

Meantime, the Abingdon Boys Baseball team made history by capturing its first-ever regional championship, also defeating West Central, but by a score of 7-2. Coach Joe Nichols has sent his teams to the Regional Championship game six out of the seven years he's been coach.

Galesburg's softball team lost two games Saturday, one to Metamora 4-1, and to Sterling 8-1. The J/V squad beat Metamota 3-1, but lost to Sterling 18-3.

The GHS baseball team saw a 6-0 lead slip away Saturday at the Streaks Classic, losing to LaSalle-Peru Saturday 10-6.

Orion tool the Class 1A softball regional title game over Stark County 6-0 at Annawan (hosted by Annawan-Wethersfield).


Galesburg High School girls track star Stephanie Saey placed fifth in the 3200 Meter run at the Class 2A State meet in Charleston Saturday, and placed eighth in the 1600 meter run. Senior Myra Diggins placed fifth in the shot put, and the 4-by-400 meter relay team of Becca Ladner, Markesha Harden, Hanna Hawkins, and Delaney Duncan placed eighth.

In the Class 1A meet, B-PC/A/West Prairie's Haley Calvery placed second in the Triple Jump; Knoxville's Haley Jones took fifth in the Triple Jump, while Monmouth-Roseville's Ciara Marlow placed ninth also in the Triple Jump. Molly Smith of Ridgewood placed third in the 300 meter hurdles, while the Titans' Maddie Dulin, Brittany Daniel, Megan Byrne, and Marlow placed fifth in the 4-by-800.

United's Mallory Tharp placed 7th in the 800 meter run, while B-PC/A/WP's Madison Benson placed ninth in the shot put. Ridgewood's Jasmine Jefko placed 12th in the shot put.


A member of the Knox College men's outdoor track and field team placed first in a long-distance event at the Augustana College Twilight Meet on Friday.

Junior Sean Choate won the 5000 meter run with his time of 15:48.05, more than 9.5 seconds ahead of the second place runner from Augustana College. Choate topped his previous career-best time of 15:53.90 that he set in the 2011 Midwest Conference Championships at Monmouth College.

Choate moves up to eighth on the all-time individual list in the event by a Knox runner and seventh on the all-time individual list.

The meet was the last of the season for the Prairie Fire, which also had a top five and two top 10 performances.

Individuals representing host Augustana, Monmouth College, North Central College, Wartburg College, Nebraska Wesleyan, UW-River Falls, Cornell College, Olivet Nazarene University and several other schools took part in the meet.
