The Galesburg Silver Streaks baseball team is headed to the championship game of the Geneseo Regional, but it took nine tough innings to get there last night. The Streaks finally beat the host Maple Leafs 2-1, as Logan Davis scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Carson Cheesman's single got the rally going, and Cheeseman was also the winning pitcher. He worked all nine innings, allowing six hits while striking out 7. The Streak's will now play Western Big-6 co-champion Alleman for the regional title Saturday at 11. Alleman advanced with a 7-1 win over Dunlap. The Pioneers are 26-3 this season, while Galesburg is 27-9.
They will try again in Bloomington today to play the semifinals in the class 1A sectional at Illinois Wesleyan University. Ridgewood meets Lexington at 4pm, and Galva/Williamsfield plays Illini Bluffs at 6pm. Postponements due to wet weather yesterday forced the schedule back 24 hours.
Sophomore Cody Reiber shot an even-par 72, and the Carl Sandburg College men's golf team is tied for 12th after the second round of the national tournament in Scottsboro, Alabama. The Chargers posted a team score of 304. South Mountain, Arizona continues to lead the tournament by seven strokes after shooting a 285 in the second round.
