A Galesburg High School athlete has received a prestigious award from the Western Big 6 Conference. The league office announced yesterday that GHS senior Travon Diggins has been selected as a co-recipient of the Don Morris Award for boys athletics.
Diggins shares the honor with Rock Island Alleman's Sean Wetherell. Diggins has been involved in football, basketball, and track for four years at GHS, having served as a team captain in each sport. The award is based not only on athletic achievement, but also on academics and community service. Diggins is the first winner from Galesburg since Greg Whittle in 2009.
The Don Morris Award has been presented annually since 1984 in honor of the former coach and administrator at Alleman High School. This is the first time that the award has been split between two recipients.
Post Season Rolls On
It continues to be do-or-die time for many area baseball, softball, and soccer teams, as regional tournament play is held this week. In baseball today, Ridgewood is battling United at Monmouth College; Galva/Williamsfield is playing Princeville in Varna; and Monmouth-Roseville is trying to upset top-seeded Mercer County at Sherrard.
The Galesburg baseball team is coming off of last night's 17-8 win over Quincy, which was the 300th victory in the career of Silver Streaks head coach Arnie Gonzalez. The Streaks next game is tomorrow night at Moline, before they close out the regular season by hosting the "Streaks Classic" on Friday and Saturday.
In softball play, several area teams are making a bid to reach Saturday's regional championship games. In Monmouth, Abingdon plays the host United red Storm; at Carthage, West Central meets Illini West; and the Galva/Williamsfield girls are playing Princeville at Lowpoint/Washburn.
In soccer, the Galesburg girls are set to play Orion/Sherrard at the Dunlap Regional this evening at 6:30.
