| Illini Name Redshirt Freshman Starting QB |
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois football coach Ron Zook has decided redshirt freshman Nathan Scheelhaase will start at quarterback this fall. Zook said Wednesday that Scheelhaase proved himself a leader during spring football practices and was the strongest quarterback on the Illinois roster in running new offensive coordinator Paul Petrino's offense. Scheelhaase is a Kansas City native. He beat out sophomore Jacob Charest for the job. Charest started occasionally last year in relief of Juice Williams for the 3-9 Illini. Scheelhaase will take his first college snaps Sept. 4 against Missouri in St. Louis. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
