Americans Advance to Round of 16
PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) -- Landon Donovan scored a stunning goal in the first minute of stoppage time to put the U.S. into the second round at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria.

The Americans' first World Cup victory in eight years secured first place in Group C. The United States finished the first round with one win and two ties and won a group for the first time since 1930.

England beat Slovenia 1-0 tie the U.S. for first place, but is relegated to second because the U.S. scored four goals in the tournament while the English had two. Slovenia was third with four points and missed advancing because of Donovan's U.S.-record 44th international goal.

The U.S. will face Group D runner-up Ghana on Saturday. Ghana is the first African team to make the knockout phase of the tournament.
