Streaks Baseball Team Trying to Deny Streator Long-Time Sectional Championship
POSTED 10:52 a-m Galesburg gets a couple of days to rest up then prepare for the baseball program's biggest game since the 2006 season.

That's the last time the Streaks won a regional and played for a sectional crown. This year's regional championship was the fifth won under coach Arnie Gonzalez. The last sectional title for Galesburg was during the 1989 season under then-coach Gary Bruington. That team went on to finish third in the state and won 28 games. The Streaks won the state title the previous season.

The Silver Streaks captured their 10th win in a row Wednesday, 13-6 against Metamora in the East Peoria Sectional Semifinals. The win improved Galesburg's record to 25-13 on the season.

Next up for GHS is Streator, which pulled off what many consider an upset of Rock Island in the other semifinal game, winning 8-7. The Bulldogs improved to 29-6 on the season while Rocky bowed out with a 31-5 mark. The teams play in the sectional championship game Saturday at Noon for a spot in the Rock Island Supersectional Monday at 5 p-m at Augustana College.

Streator, coached by Nick McGurk, hasn't won a sectional championship since 1963, when the team went on to state. The Bulldogs outhit Rock Island 15-4 in the game. Streator starting pitcher Drew Sabol picked up his 12th win of the season without a loss. The 29 victories by the Bulldogs ties a school record and matches the same number of wins the 2005 team picked up, which also won Streator's last baseball regional championship before this season's squad accomplished the feat.

The sectional champ plays the winner of the DeKalb Sectional. DeKalb beat Sycamore 5-4 in Wednesday's first semifinal game. The other one is Thursday between Burlington Central and Aurora Marmion Academy.
