|United Bounces Back for Third Place Finish
|POSTED 12:30 p-m, UPDATED 1:17 p-m 6/5/10 United didn't let a rare lopsided loss ruin a special time at state as the Red Storm bounced back to win the third place game.
The Red Storm scored three runs in the first inning, then added two more each in the second and third frames to beat Serena 7-3 Saturday morning in a game that was called in the top of the sixth inning because of wet playing conditions.
The win takes some of the sting out of Friday's 10-2 loss against Cobden, the winner of the last two state titles in Class 1A at the expense of the Red Storm. The latest defeat for United, though, was especially painful. The Appleknockers hit two home runs, one a grand slam, and scored nine runs in the second inning en route to the lopsided win. United was hoping the third matchup against the southern Illinois school from Union County would be the charm - but it wasn't meant to be.
The Red Storm were able to shake off the loss. The team banged out nine hits in the third place game, including two apiece from Gina Long and Kaitlyn Winkler (2-for-3). Winkler knocked in two runs and scored twice and Katie Kaywood had two RBIs in her only at-bat. Long and Augusta Chandler each had an RBI for United.
Katie Bertelsen gave up seven hits and three runs, but only one of them earned, and struck out eight to earn the win. She finished the season with a 29-6 record in the circle.
Megan Gunier drove in two runs for Serena, which finished with a 20-14 record and a fourth place trophy in the school's first trip to the state tournament in softball.
United ends the campaign with a 31-6 record.
