|Moline Softball Team No Stranger to State
|POSTED 12:28 p-m 6/10/10 The Class 3A and 4A softball state semifinalists have one more day off before they play for the ultimate goal - a state title.
Friday's Class 3A semifinals begin at 9:30 a-m when River Forest Trinity (33-5) plays Breese Mater Dei (24-10). The Blazers of Trinity are making their first state appearance in school history. The Lady Knights of Mater Dei are making their fifth overall state tournament appearance and first since 1992. Mater Dei has never brought home a trophy in the state tourney.
The second semifinal game at Noon features Metamora (40-1) taking on Antioch (31-5). The Redbirds have won 31 straight games after losing the only time this season against Marengo on April 3rd. Metamora is making its third state appearance. The last trip was 28 years ago (1982). Antioch has won 12 games in a row and is making its first appearance at state.
The winners play for the state championship around Noon on Saturday after the losers square off in the third place game Saturday morning at 9:30.
Class 4A's semifinal match-ups are Palatine Fremd and Elk Grove Village in the first game Friday at 4:30. The second semifinal game at 7 p-m features Moline of the Western Big Six Conference and Orland Park Sandburg.
The Maroons (28-8) are making their 12th state trip. Moline's last appearance was golden - a state championship in 2006 and a 40-0-1 record. The Maroons also won state championships in 1987, 1988, 1994 and 1996. In addition, Moline has five second-place finishes to go along with five state titles, one third-place finish and a fourth-place finish.
Orland Park Sandburg (38-2) is also a veteran of the state tournament. This year marks the school's 11th appearance. The Eagles last went in 2006 and finished third that year. Orland Park lost to Moline in the 2000 state tournament and has never won a state championship.
Palatine Fremd (32-4) finished third in last year's state tournament and returns this year for the sixth time. The Vikings are in search of their first state title. Elk Grove Village (36-4) returns to the state tournament for the second time in school history. The Grenadiers' last appearance was in 1982 and the school finished second that year.
The Class 4A third place game is Saturday at 4:30 p-m followed by the championship game.
