|Class 3A Baseball & Softball State Tournament Results: 6/11/10
|POSTED 3:15 p.m. 6/11/10 The semifinal games are in the books at the Class 3A state softball tournament in East Peoria and the Class 3A state baseball tournament in Joliet.
The first softball victory was posted by a team making its first state appearance in school history. River Forest Trinity rallied from an early deficit and overcame four errors to beat Breese Mater Dei 9-7.
Breese (24-11) scored twice in the first inning on three hits and an error by the Blazers (34-5). Trinity plated five runs in the top of the third inning on two hits, a solo home run and a three-run blast - the second homer sandwiched between a hit batsman, an error, a passed ball and a walk - to take a 5-2 lead.
The Lady Knights responded with four tallies in the bottom of the third inning on just two hits. Trinity committed three errors in the inning to help Mater Dei reclaim a 6-5 lead.
Trinity took over during the final four innings allowing just two hits while the offense kept clicking.
The Blazers tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth, took the lead for good with two more runs in the fifth and added one more in the top of the seventh. Breese plated its final run in the bottom of the sixth.
The second semifinal game was a pitchers dual between Metamora and Antioch that the Redbirds won in their final at-bat.
The teams combined for six hits, but four errors by the Sequoits (31-6) hurt them as the Redbirds (41-1) scored the winning run on a passed ball with two outs in the seventh inning.
Antioch drew first blood in the top of the fifth inning when a run scored on an error by Metamora. The Redbirds responded with their first run in the bottom of the sixth, also on an error. Nobody had an RBI in the game.
Redbird pitcher Jodi Rebholz (28-1) set down Antioch's hitters 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh frames to earn the win. She surrendered one earned run, struck out four and walked one while uncorking one wild pitch.
Antioch's Olivia Duehr (20-6) took the loss. Both runs she gave up were unearned. Duehr struck out three and got Metamora to ground out nine times in the game.
The Redbirds and Trinity will play Saturday in the Class 3A championship game following the third place game at 9:30 a-m between Breese Mater Dei and Antioch.
All four semifinalists will bring home hardware for the first time. This is the Blazers' first state tournament appearance. The Lady Knights are at state for the fifth time, including their first trip since 1992, but have never won a trophy.
Metamora, which has now won 32 straight games, is at state for the third time but has no trophy to show for the previous appearances. The Redbirds' last trip was 28 years ago. Like Trinity, this is Antioch's first trip to state.
The fist Class 3A state semifinal baseball game was shockingly one-sided.
Chatham Glenwood (31-4) avenged last season's state championship loss against the Hilltoppers by blasting Joliet Catholic 17-5 in five innings.
The Titans scored early and often - plating four runs in the first, three in the second and seven in the third before adding another three runs when the game was long decided. Glenwood had 18 hits, including four by third baseman Jake Ingold who also had seven RBIs. Eight of the nine batters for the Titans drove in at least one run and and nine had at least one hit.
Joliet Catholic (22-15), making its 11th state appearance and third straight - this one in its own backyard - had seven hits in the game and scored all five runs in the last two innings. The Hilltoppers have won two state titles.
Glenwood goes for its second state championship Saturday against DeKalb (27-10). The Barbs beat Woodstock Marian 6-1.
Woodstock (27-10), which will take on Joliet Catholic Saturday at 9 a-m in the third place game, is at state for the fourth time. DeKalb, which knocked out Galesburg in the Rock Island Supersectional, is making its second trip to state and its first appearance in the championship game.
Joliet Catholic finished third in 2008. DeKalb's last state appearance was in 1995, a 1-0 loss to Chatham Glenwood. The Titans went on to finish second that season.
