A Draw for U.S. and England
RUSTENBURG, South Africa (AP) -- The U.S. has opened its World Cup schedule with a 1-1 draw against England.

Clint Dempsey provided the game-tying goal in the 40th minute before the Americans held on for the stalemate in Rustenburg, South Africa. The U.S. fell behind quickly as Steve Gerrard (jur-AHRD') beat Tim Howard from short range in the fourth minute.

Howard made several big stops to keep the tie intact after Dempsey's fluke goal knotted the score. Dempsey tied it when goalkeeper Robert Green fumbled his 25-yard shot, allowing it to skip into the net.

The U.S. has its next game Friday against Slovenia, hours before England takes the pitch against Algeria.

Also Saturday in South Africa, Argentina edged Nigeria 1-0, while Greece lost to South Korea 2-0.
