| Illinois Survives, Beats Cal St Fullerton |
FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) -- Matt Dittman singled in the go-ahead run in Illinois' three-run eighth inning and the Big Ten champion Illini held off Cal State Fullerton 7-5 on Sunday in an elimination game in the NCAA Fullerton Regional.
Two batters after Dittman gave Illinois (30-26) the lead against Titans closer Nick Ramirez (1-1), Davis Hendrickson had a two-two double to complete the scoring.
Chris Pack (8-1) came on in relief to get Ramirez to pop up with a runner on third in the ninth.
The Titans (41-17) scored three runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead, with Ramirez _ 3 for 4 at the plate _ driving in the first two runs with a single. Illinois, 18-5 in its last 23 games, tied it 4 in the seventh on a wild pitch and Pete Cappetta's single.
Illinois faced Stanford on Sunday night, needing a win to force a second game Monday night. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
