Cubs Take Baez with 9th Pick
CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago Cubs have taken high school infielder Javier Baez with the ninth pick in the draft.

The 18 year old Baez was selected by Baseball America as the best pure hitter among all high school-eligible players and fifth-best high school position player in this class.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Baez batted .771 with 22 homers and 52 RBIs while leading Arlington Country Day of Jacksonville, Fla., to the National Association of Christian Athletics championship this past season. He also scored 46 runs, stole 28 bases and drew 32 walks with just three strikeouts.

Cubs director of amateur and professional scouting Tim Wilken says Baez ``has a tremendously live bat, is versatile in the field'' and that he ``has a great arm and is a smart baserunner in tune with the game.''

A native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Baez is the second member of his family to be drafted. His brother Rolando Agosto, an infielder, was a 15th-round selection by the San Diego Padres in 2002.
