A doubleheader sweep has pushed the Galesburg Legion baseball team's record to 16-3 going into this evening's game at East Moline. Post 285 topped Macomb last night by scores of 2-1 and 6-1, with Galesburg pitchers allowing just two hits in each contest. Tyler Johnson went the distance to get the win in the opener, while four pitchers combined to shut down Macomb in the nightcap. Tonight's matchup in the Quad Cities is just a single game with East Moline, and then Coach Steve Cheeseman and company will play a weekend tournament in Washington beginning tomorrow.

In other Legion play this evening, Monmouth travels to Moline, and Oneida hosts Bartonville Limestone.

Minor League Baseball

A former big league all-star will begin a four-game stint as manager of the Burlington Bees tonight. Omar Vizquel, who excelled at shortstop for many years with the Cleveland Indians and several other major league teams, will direct the Bees against Clinton while manager Jamie Burke is gone this weekend. Vizquel is an 11-time gold glove winner who finished his career with 2,877 hits .


A former Monmouth College quarterback has taken a job with the Chicago Bears. Mitch Tanney, who led the Fighting Scots to their first-ever playoff appearance in 2005, has been named the Bears director of analytics. The position will allow Tanney to use statistics to evaluate players and help in game situations. Tanney joins the Bears after working with STATS, LLC, a company that bills itself as the world's leader in sports technology. Mitch Tanney, older brother to recent standout Alex Tanney at Monmouth, played professional football in Europe as well as arena football in the United States following his collegiate career.
