|Illinois Ends High School Dunk Contest
|PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- The organization that oversees high school sports in Illinois has decided to do away with the slam-dunk contest held each year during the boys' state basketball championships.
Bob Peterson is a member of an Illinois High School Association committee that considered the matter. He said Tuesday that many players would sign up for the dunk contest each year but relatively few would actually show up.
The committee recommended the contest end, and the IHSA board agreed.
Peterson added that small schools like Putnam County in north-central Illinois where he's a principal have very few kids who can dunk or coaches who want their players to try.
The dunk contest was started in 1992.
