Ghana Falls to Uruguay in World Cup Action
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) -- Uruguay escaped sure defeat in the closing seconds of overtime and went on to beat Ghana 2-1 on penalty kicks in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Ghana put on relentless pressure in the closing seconds of the overtime and was awarded a penalty kick on a hand ball.

A goal would have made Ghana the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals. Uruguay makes its first trip to the semifinals since 1970 and will meet the Netherlands.
