| Byrd is 1st Cub in 105 Years to Get Hit 16 Times |
CHICAGO (AP) -- All-Star Marlon Byrd became the first Cubs player in 105 years to be hit at least 16 times in a season when he was plunked twice on Sunday night.
Byrd was hit on the left thigh in the second and struck on the back in the sixth, each time by Philadelphia ace Roy Halladay. It was the third time in his career that he had been hit twice in a game and second against the Phillies this season. He also was hit twice on Thursday.
Byrd is the fourth Cubs player to get hit at least 16 times in a season and first since Frank Chance got plunked 17 times in 1905.
Bill Dahlen got hit a Cubs-record 23 times in 1898. Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks has been hit 17 times and leads the majors.
Byrd scored on two-run homers each time he was hit by Halladay. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
