|Babe Ruth Players Ready to Play, Cal Ripken Teams Seeking Donations
|Last weekend the Cal Ripken 9 to 11 year olds held their state tournament in Galesburg, and this weekend the community will host the Babe Ruth league 14-year-olds in their state finals at Sundburg Field.
In one of the two opening games, Galesburg will play LaGrange Thursday night at 7.
Meanwhile, the four Galesburg Cal Ripken teams that advanced to the Ohio Valley Regionals are making preparations to head out for their next round of games this weekend.
Jim Melvin of Galesburg will lead the 12-year-old team to Lexington, KY, and told the "WGIL Morning News" that they will be leaving soon.
"Most of these teams are going to have to report (Thursday) for their orientation and opening ceremonies, with play beginning Friday through the weekend," Melvin said. "Some of these tournaments probably won't finish wrapping up until either Monday or Tuesday depending on how well the teams perform."
Melvil added that the expense of transportation, food, and lodging for the teams is being partially handled by the league, but there's still a shortfall. If you would like to donate, the 9-year-old team is having a car wash at the Ayerco station on North Henderson Street Wednesday, or you can call Jim Melvin at 335-7184.
