| Molina Attends Daughter's Birth -- And Plays |
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Yadier Molina had a big day before the St. Louis Cardinals hit the field, attending to the birth of his daughter and getting voted in as a starter on the National League All-Star team for the second straight year.
Manager Tony La Russa said Sunday he asked Molina several days ago if he needed a day off. Molina, who has two children, told the manager he wanted to play.
Molina was the top vote-getter based on defense. He was batting .231 and was in a 4 for 49 slump entering Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. But he's been strong behind the plate, throwing out a major league-leading 41 percent of baserunners since 2005. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
