| Cubs RHP Out With Shoulder Injury |
PHOENIX (AP) -- The Chicago Cubs have placed right-hander Brian Schlitter on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder impingement and recalled righty Mitch Atkins from Triple-A Iowa.
Schlitter, who began the season at Iowa, had a cortisone shot on Saturday, but his shoulder didn't improve enough and the Cubs need pitchers in the bullpen. He has allowed five runs in three innings.
Chicago manager Lou Piniella said Schlitter will stay in Arizona to work out and rejoin the team in Chicago after the All-Star break. He goes on the DL retroactive to Saturday.
Atkins is 5-2 with a save and a 3.60 ERA in 18 appearances with Iowa. He started the season in the bullpen and moved into the rotation on May 9.
