Local Sports Roundup 7/21/11
A field of 11 Cal Ripken League baseball teams have arrived in Galesburg for this weekend's Ohio Valley Regional Tournament to be played at Voyles Field. Communications director Martha Shay with the Galesburg Youth Baseball League reported Thursday that brackets for the event are having to be redone, after one squad cancelled out, leaving an odd number of teams to compete. Games for the eleven-year-olds will begin Friday, with an icebreaker party being held Thursday evening at Lakeside in Galesburg.

While Galesburg has no teams taking part in the event it's hosting, the 9 and 10-year-old teams traveled to Indiana and Kentucky Thursday, where they will begin tournament play Friday. The Galesburg "Gold" 10-year-olds could be in Lexington, Kentucky through Tuesday if they play their way into the finals.

A new full-time assistant basketball coach has been hired at Knox College. Mike Dashner, who served as a volunteer assistant at St. Norbert College last year, will join the staff of head coach Rob Purlee for the upcoming season. Dashner's primary responsibilities will be recruiting, video, and working with post players. He replaces former assistant Bobby Wheet, who spent three years at Knox before leaving in June for Hartwick College in upstate New York.

The Galesburg Legion baseball team took another step towards the Division 3 Tournament title in Jerseyville Wednesday night with a 10-5 win over Rock Island. Galesburg plated seven runs in the 8th inning to rally for the win. Post 285 now has the inside track to the championship of the double elimination event, as they're the only team without a loss, and will have Thursday off before getting two chances (if needed) to win the title Friday., Galesburg is now 37-11, and will play at noon Friday, likely against Washington or Rock Island again.
