| Clarke Holding Off Mickelson in Open Finale |
SANDWICH, England (AP) -- Darren Clarke is holding off an impressive charge by Phil Mickelson, making the turn with a two-stroke lead at the British Open.
Clarke was one stroke ahead at the beginning of play Sunday, but Mickelson caught him at 5 under with three birdies and an eagle in the first seven holes.
The 42-year-old from Northern Ireland didn't falter. He made an eagle of his own at the seventh, posted a 2-under 33 on the front side and is 7 under for the tournament.
Mickelson played the outward nine in 30 and knocked off another shot with an 18-footer for birdie at the 10th. Lefty gave that one right back, lipping out a 2-footer at the next hole to slip to 5 under.
Thomas Bjorn and Dustin Johnson are the closest challengers, both four shots back. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
