Local Sports Roundup 7/23/12
All City Golf

Stephanie Mitchell and Jackson Wetherbee emerged as the winners of this year's Galesburg All-City Golf Tournaments. The two took very different routes to their titles, however, as Mitchell ran away from the field to win the women's event, while Wetherbee rallied to win the hotly-contested men's title Sunday at Lake Bracken. Wetherbee shot an even-par 71 to finish with a 4-round total of 280, while defending champion Coby Thompson and Mack Foster finished tied for second at 282. Third round leader Mike Tapper was fourth at 284.

Legion Baseball

It's on to Geneseo -- and the Division Tournament -- for the Galesburg Post 285 baseball team, after they rallied to win the District 15 tournament last week with a pair of wins over Oneida. Galesburg takes a record of 38-14 into Tuesday's matchup with Jerseyville, which is scheduled for a 12 noon start. Post 285 had to win 5 straight games to get out of the district tournament, after losing their opening game against Farmington.

Youth Baseball

Galesburg teams came up short at the Cal Ripken state tournaments held here over the weekend. The host team lost the 10-year-old championship game to Homewood Sunday afternoon 14-2, while the 11-year-old Galesburg National team was beaten by Geneseo on Saturday 3-2. Galesburg Youth League spokesman Martha Shea says the league season will wrap up Monday night, followed by their end of the season tournament. She said Galesburg is also hosting an invitational tournament the first weekend in August.
