Coach gets new job

Galesburg native Jason Shay has a new coaching assignment. The former Silver Streak yesterday was named as an assistant basketball coach at the University of North Dakota. Shay was formerly on University of Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl's staff for six seasons, but was dismissed following a recruiting scandal involving Pearl in March of 2011. Shay's NCAA penalty from that incident expired last August, allowing him to return to the college coaching ranks.

Ohio Valley Tourney

Cal Ripken League baseball teams from six states are arriving in Galesburg today. They will be taking part in the Ohio Valley Regional 11-year-old tournament to be played at Voyles Field tomorrow through Sunday. The players, coaches, and tournament officials will get together tonight at Lakeside for a barbeque and swimming time, prior to the opening round of pool play tomorrow. Teams from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and West Virginia will comprise the field of 12 competing for the title. Games begin at 11am tomorrow, but the opening ceremonies will wait until 6:30pm.....just before Galesburg plays Jeffersontown, Kentucky at 7.

Galesburg High School is hosting a tennis tournament next weekend which will serve as a fundraiser for the program. High School coach Leanne Scherpe has details of the first-time event.

In the event of rain, matches will be played indoors at the Lakeside facility, where Leanne says they are a great help to the GHS tennis program.

Leanne noted that Maddy Ethington and Bill Sargeant continue to be assistant coaches and strong supporters of GHS tennis. The fundraising event begins on Monday, August 10th.
