| Teenager Wants to Play Basketball With Service Dog |
CHICAGO (AP) -- Special Olympics Illinois is reacting to a federal lawsuit that claims a suburban Chicago high school girl with cerebral palsy is being barred from playing basketball with other disabled students.
The advocacy group Equip for Equality sued Monday on behalf of Jennifer Youngwith. The 17-year-old attends Community High School in West Chicago. The suit names Special Olympics Illinois and the school district as defendants.
The girl uses a service dog to carry a four-pound oxygen tank she needs.
Special Olympics Illinois President Doug Snyder says he can't comment on the specifics of the lawsuit. But he says Special Olympics Illinois must make decisions that take into account the safety of all participating athletes. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
