|Knoxville Parent Urges Serious Treatment of Cheerleading
|Knoxville High School is looking for a new cheerleading coach.
District 202 board members Wednesday night accepted the resignation of Cara Bent.
During the public comments section of the board's meeting, Nedra Walker, the mother of a freshman cheerleader said the board needs to take cheerleading seriously.
"My husband and I are watching how girls are treated at Knoxville High School," Walker said. "They are not second class citizens to a football team, the basketball team, or a baseball team. Cheerleading is a sport. It's taken very seriously by parents and daughters that have made this cheerleading squad."
Walker also spoke with the board during closed session. She apparently had concerns the high school girl's cheerleading program wasn't held in the same regard as the boy's football team.
Walker apparently wanted to ensure the search for a new coach would be taken as seriously as if the board were searching for a coach for any other sport.
It is unclear why the current coach submitted her resignation.
