| Rescued IL Racehorse Enjoying Retirement |
MILLSTADT, Ill. (AP) -- An Illinois horse that narrowly escaped a trip to a Mexico slaughterhouse and became a Chicago-area racehorse is now retired.
Buck returned last month to Mid-America Horse Rescue near the southwestern Illinois town of Millstadt, two days after closing out his racing career with a fifth-place showing at Arlington Park.
Buck's prospects looked perilous in 2007. That's when horse-rescue operator Margo Sutter learned he was among horses bought at a southwestern Illinois paddock sale by a supplier under contract to a Mexican slaughterhouse.
Sutter bought Buck along with two other horses and had him trained to be a racehorse. His best showing of about a half dozen races was a third-place finish in May.
Starting next month, Buck will undergo retraining to make him a showhorse. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
