Scots Football Ranked by D3 Website
Just days before the players arrive on campus, the Monmouth College football team has been ranked in the D3football.com preseason poll.

D3football.com, which touts itself as the "No. 1 source for Division III football information," ranked the Fighting Scots 17th heading into the 2010 campaign. The website, dedicated to coverage of Division III football, had ranked Monmouth as high as No. 8 in last year's regular season poll.

Earlier this summer, USA Today, the Sporting News and Lindy's Sports Annual ranked Monmouth 11th, 16th and 19th, respectively. The Scots had climbed as high as No. 8 last season in both the American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com regular season polls.

The Fighting Scots return 32 letterwinners, including senior quarterback Alex Tanney, who was named the nation's top Division III player in 2009, and their top two receivers from a year ago, seniors Matt Shepherd and Mike Blodgett. The defense returns six starters from last year's stingy unit. Monmouth was ranked eighth in the nation last season for scoring defense, allowing less than 13 points per game. The Scots were third in pass efficiency defense and fifth in turnover margin.

Monmouth won its second consecutive Midwest Conference title last season and finished with a 10-1 record. Head coach Steve Bell needs just one more win to become the winningest coach in MC football history. The Scots will open their home season Sept. 11 against Grinnell in the programs 1,000th game in school history. The season opens Sept. 4 at Wartburg.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Mount Union and were ranked 1-2 by D3football.com. Whitewater defeated Mount Union 38-28 last December in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the national title.
