|A school program will test athletes for concussions in about 3,300 middle and high schools. The hope is that 1 million youngsters will have the exams and learn about concussions.
Nearly 3.8 million youngsters had concussions last year while taking part in sports and recreation.
The program is known as PACE _ Protecting Athletes Through Concussion Education _ and will feature a computerized concussion evaluation system.
The program will be funded by Dick's Sporting Goods, which will sponsor appearances by pro athletes who have had concussions. Among them is former star running back Jerome Bettis, a spokesman for the program.
