The Galesburg School Board is expected to give its approval Monday night to a proposed change in the Western Big 6 Conference. In what is considered to be a formality, the board will vote on the addition of four Peoria schools to join the conference for football-only beginning in the 2013 season. The addition of Peoria Central, Manual, Notre Dame, and Richwoods was approved by the Peoria District 150 Board on July 24th, at the invitation of the Western Big 6. Travel and scheduling advantages for all the schools involved are listed as the reasons for the change. Also, the Peoria schools would not have had enough teams to form a conference after this season, as Quincy Notre Dame and Chillicothe IVC are departing the Midstate Six. Previous member Pekin left for the Mid-Illini Conference several years ago.
A familiar opponent for the Galesburg American Legion baseball team is still playing Monday at the Great Lakes Regional Tournament. Moline Post 246 kept it's hopes for a trip to the Legion World Series alive over the weekend by winning three consecutive games. Moline takes a record of 46-7 into Monday's matchups with Adrian, Michigan and Terre Haute, Indiana. Galesburg went 2-3 against Moline this summer, dropping the Division Tournament Championship game to Post 246 by a score of 6-2.
