The kickoff to the new season of high school football comes up tomorrow night, with nearly all of the varsity teams in Illinois seeing their first action. Here in Galesburg, the Silver Streaks will host the Moline Maroons. Moline first-year head coach Matt Woods says his biggest concern going into this week was the lack of preparation time allowed by the IHSA.
As for the Silver Streaks, the facilities at Van Dyke Field are drawing more attention than the opponent, as construction on the new stadium is making for some inconvenience to players and fans this fall. GHS Athletic Director Ralph Henning says one change that is NOT related to the construction is the moving of the teams to the opposite sides of the field.
The reduction in available parking near the field will result in many fans having to walk an extra distance to get to the game. A pair of diesel generators will be used to power the lights at the field for the four home dates on this year's schedule. WGIL will be there once again with Brad Bennewitz and Jim Lee calling the action beginning at 7:06 tomorrow night.
The first guesses as to what football teams will be the best in the state this season came out yesterday, and familiar names from the area dot the top-10 lists for each class. Rock Island shows up at #4 in class 6A, while Alleman is ranked #1 in class 4A. Monmouth-Roseville gets the #6 nod in class 3A, and defending state champ Mercer County is #3 in class 2A. In class 1A, Stark County shows at #5 in the preseason poll.
Many of the area's volleyball teams will be in action tonight, as Knoxville travels to Monmouth-Roseville; ROWVA hosts Lewistown; and Williamsfield entertains Ridgewood. In college play, Carl Sandburg welcomes Lincoln for a 6pm match.
In golf, the Galesburg girls are playing in Moline.
In tennis, the Streak's girls are at Alleman.
