Midwest Conference Polls

Midwest Conference Football and Volleyball coaches have been polled for their predictions on the upcoming seasons, and the consensus is that last year's champs will prevail again. In football, that would be the St. Norbert Green Knights, who are a slight favorite over Illinois College. Monmouth is picked to finish fourth in the league, while Knox is forecast to finish at the #9 spot. The Prairie Fire will be their first season under new head coach Damon Tomeo. They will open at Eureka College on September 7th. Monmouth's opener will be at home on the same date against Coe.

The Conference volleyball coaches gave a near-unanimous nod to defending league champion Cornell as the team to beat again this year. The Rams received 10 of 11 first place votes, with St. Norbert grabbing the other. Monmouth is picked in a tie for third place with Lake Forest, while Knox is forecast for 10th place.

Tomorrow will be the first day for High School fall sports teams to have organized practices. The Illinois High School Association regulates the start of practices, to try and keep those who would start early from having any unfair advantage. The Streaks are coming off of a playoff appearance last season, and will open this year at home against the Moline Maroons on the 30th of this month. We'll have comments from coach Dougherty tomorrow at 8:35 on the WGIL Morning News.
