It's the first day of practice for high school sports teams today, as allowed by the Illinois High School Association. Galesburg High School teams are wasting no time in their return to action, as the soccer, golf, and football squads are outside in the unusually cool conditions. Silver Streaks head football coach Tim Dougherty is beginning his third year at the helm for GHS, and says a couple of weeks isn't much time to put a team together.
The Galesburg High School campus enters the new school year looking a little disheveled, as the construction work continues on the outdoor athletic facilities. Coach Dougherty says it was a distraction for the team during summer camps, but acknowledges it will be worth the inconvenience down the road.
The Silver Streaks are coming off of a season that saw them advance to the playoffs for the just the third time in school history, but there are many positions to be filled from the loss of the graduated senior class. Coach Dougherty says they are already dealing with adversity, as a key running back recently sustained an injury while jogging, and several projected starters have been slapped with athletic code violations and will miss the first third of the season due to their misconduct. The Streaks will open the season against Moline in a little over two weeks.
