|Football practice is underway this week in Galesburg and elsewhere, as teams prepare for their opening games that are scheduled for August 30th.
GHS Head Coach Tim Dougherty says his team will be tested early, beginning with conference rival Moline, who they beat last year for the first time in over two decades.
"I'm sure that they highlighted our game," Doughtery said. "You look at the schedule, our regular season schedule, I'm not sure that they played as challenging a schedule, top to bottom, in nine games in a long, long time. In the first four games, we've got Alleman, state runner-up, Moline, who we beat after 22 years, Richwoods is in there; they've been in the semi-finals three of the last four years. It'll be a challenge. But that's how you get better, meeting those challenges. Fortunately, other than one of those teams, we've played those teams, and we're somewhat familiar with them at all levels."
The Silver Streaks have one more season to play in the Western Big 6 Conference, before it is dissolved into what will be called the "Midwest 10" league next year. The change was supposed to take place this season until a scheduling conflict occurred, postponing the debut of the new conference until next year. However, all of Galesburg's non-conference games will be played against the Peoria schools this season.
