| Bears Legend Points to Defense As Key in '09 |
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- The way Dick Butkus sees it, Jay Cutler would be "in Canada somewhere" had he tried to force George Halas to trade him.
The Hall of Fame linebacker also believes his former team won't go anywhere unless the defense holds up. Having a franchise quarterback helps, but Butkus says what happens on the other side of the ball will determine whether the Chicago Bears get back to the playoffs.
But during a recent phone interview, Butkus said if the Bears "don't improve from last year, I don't know if God could really help them at quarterback."
The Bears open their season Sunday at Green Bay.
