Galesburg Repeats as Champs of Limestone Soccer Tourney
Having a stranglehold on a tournament is the type of habit a team doesn't want to break.

The Galesburg High School varsity boys soccer team captured its fourth straight Limestone Tournament title on Saturday.

Coach Tim Redington's Streaks swept all three of their matches to claim the championship trophy. With the wins, GHS moved its season record to 5-0-1.

Galesburg got by Illini Bluffs 2-1 Friday night and then beat Peoria High 10-0 before knocking off host Limestone 3-0.

Against a solid Illini Bluffs crew, the Streaks scored the first two goals. Mark Zhorne got GHS on the scoreboard from an assist by Jacob Krisher. Krisher scored the Streaks' second goal. Illini Bluffs got their only score late in the contest on well-placed kick from a restart.

The Saturday morning match with Peoria High proved to be no contest as GHS out-shot the Lions 22 to 1 in the time-shortened match.

Tyler Gregory and Richie Hershkowitz each scored two goals. Nicky Patel, Matthew Nelson, Trenton Addis, Krisher, Andrew Smith and Colton Boydstun all had one goal apiece. The Streaks led 5-0 at the half and doubled the margin the second period.

In the championship match with Limestone, a throw-in by Jacob Polay resulted in a self-goal as the ball went off a Limestone defender into the goal in the 27th minute. GHS carried that 1-0 lead into the second half.

Krisher scored on a penalty kick in the 59th minute and Zhorne added an unassisted tally in the 66th minute. GHS out-shot the Rockets 8 to 5. Lucas Miller earned both shutouts in goal with six saves on Saturday.

Next up for the GHS boys will be another non-conference match against a team that also won a tournament last weekend. The Streaks will travel to the EastSide Centre on Thursday to play Peoria Christian. The junior varsity match will be at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.
