| Yakees First to Clinch MLB Playoff Spot |
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The New York Yankees are headed back to the playoffs, clinching their 14th appearance in 15 seasons with the Texas Rangers' loss at Oakland. New York missed the postseason for the first time since 1994 last fall in manager Joe Girardi's debut campaign. The Yankees won 17 playoff series and four World Series in that 13-year span. The Yankees are the first team to clinch a postseason spot this fall. They're also in a commanding position to get homefield advantage throughout the postseason. The Athletics' 9-1 victory ended while the Yankees led the Los Angeles Angels 5-4 in the eighth inning. A victory would give New York a six-game AL East lead over Boston and a 5 1/2 game edge on the Angels for the AL's best record. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
