| Shutout Innings Propel Red Sox Past White Sox |
CHICAGO (AP) -- Jon Lester allowed four hits over seven shutout innings and Mike Lowell and Victor Martinez homered Sunday as the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 6-1.
Boston increased its AL wild-card lead to three games over Texas, which lost to Baltimore 7-0.
Lester (12-7) walked two and struck out eight, giving him 204 for the season. He's the 10th pitcher in Red Sox history to reach 200 strikeouts in a season and the first since Daisuke Matsuzaka two years ago.
Lowell hit his 17th homer, a high fly into the White Sox's bullpen in the fourth, after Jason Bay started the inning with a single off John Danks (12-9). (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
