| Canada Upsets China Behind Smith's 25 Points |
OSTRAVA, Czech Republic (AP) -- Kimberley Smith scored 25 points to help Canada upset China 65-61 in the women's basketball world championship on Friday.
Tamara Tatham scored nine of her 11 points in the second half for Canada (1-1), which rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit.
Chen Nan scored 22 points and Miao Lijie added 20 for China (0-2), which needed the win to keep alive its hopes of advancing to the second round. The Chinese lost to Belarus in the opener and face defending national champion Australia on Saturday in their Group A finale.
For China, being eliminated in the first round would be a huge setback for the basketball-loving nation that finished fourth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
