CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) -- The first game at Southern Illinois University's first football game at its new stadium was a sellout.
SIU athletic director Mario Moccia says 15,276 people attended Thursday's SIU-Quincy game at the new Saluki Stadium. That's about 300 people over capacity. Moccia tells The Southern Illinoisan newspaper that a typical home opener usually draws about 8,000 people.
It was the first sellout in more than 20 years.
The Salukis defeated Quincy in 70-7 blowout game. The next home game will be against Southeast Missouri State University on Sept. 18.
The Carbondale school also will debut a renovated basketball arena later this fall.
